Theater in Vienna 1900

HUGO THIMIG (1912-1917)

Actor

*June 16,1854 Dresden, +Sept. 24,1944 Vienna

Thimig, famous for his extraordinary character roles and comedic talent, was more an actor than a managing director. He became an ensemble member of the Burgtheater from 1874-1923, and worked from 1923-36 at the Theater in der Josefstadt. Managing the Burgtheater during wartime was an incredible challenge for him. The actors had to be pensioned from war service and there was little subvention for keeping a theatre alive. After beginning of the WWII in 1914, many foreign plays had to be erased from the season’s program.

With the fall of the monarchy’s empire, the vernacular theater gained more respect and became as honorable as the court theater. Thus the popular actor, such as famous Operetta star and popular actor, Alexander Girardi joined the Burgtheater. From now on the Burgtheater was a federal institution and not under control of emperor Franz Joseph anymore.

One of Thimig’s highlights:

  • New production of Goethe’s Goetz von Berlichingen (1915) by the first only- director, Arthur Holz.
