Founded in 1776, the Burgtheater belongs to the oldest and most traditional theatres of the world. As the royal court theater it was funded by the government, however presented primarily a conservative upper class audience. It featured traditional big budget productions with rich décor, distinguished actors and elaborate design. Over the years a constantly changing ensemble formed the specific Burgtheater style, which was characterized by a particular way of speaking.
The Burgtheater holds a gallery with a collection of portraits, sculptures and frescos, which, accumulated over the period of two decades, honor past artist throughout the entire building.
