Washington MESA recently participated in the annual UNESCO International Model United Nations (IMUN)/STEM Summer program.
UNESCO serves as a space for students around the world to gather to promote peace education, science, culture, and communication through dialogue.
1000 student delegates from over 90 countries met to kick off the 14th annual International Model United Nations – STEAM Summer Program.
Washington MESA participated because our vision co-aligned with UNESCO’s mission. Washington MESA’s vision is to engage and prepare K – 16 underrepresented leaders to be competitive innovators in STEM fields. We believe that partnering with UNESCO allows Washington MESA to share expertise that empowers international students to be STEM innovators in the United States and their respective countries.
“It is an honor to share relevant information with such promising future leaders in STEM and/or other leadership roles. It excites us when we can dispense recommendations and strategies to increase diversity in STEM degree attainment and careers,” says Dr. Gregory King, Washington MESA’s executive director who also presented to over 200 student delegates.
Additionally, Sezi Fleming, Director K-14 STEM Education with the Washington MESA State Office, and Penda Samba, Director for Tacoma and South Puget Sound MESA, facilitated workshops on STEM identity development and connecting STEM principles of problem-solving skills and social transformation. Student delegates were to identify and propose solutions to environmental injustices.
