By integrating digital technology (web discussion board, email, "UMail," DVD tutorials, learner-centered web sites), learning theory (learning styles, scaffolding, social learning, Bloom's taxonomy) and outcomes alignment (aligning explicit course outcomes with assessment, teaching and learning processes, texts, and students' background), the presenter created a course that produced substantially improved outcomes in less time for both the instructor and the students while resulting in lower student evaluation scores.

This presentation describes the methods and analyzes the results of this experiment while considering thorny questions about "efficiency" and the conflicting nature of student, faculty, and institutional goals.
