Dr. Hassim&#8217;s lecture, \u201cThe Life of Winnie Mandela: Embodiments of Violence under Racial Capitalism\u201d will take place on Wednesday\u00a0May\u00a02, at 4pm in Communications Room 120. Reception to follow in Communications 202.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif; color: #333333;\">Shireen Hassim is a professor of political studies at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), currently based at WISER (Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research). She has written and edited several books, including\u00a0<em><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">No Shortcuts to Power: African Women in Politics and Policy Making\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(Zed Books, 2003) and\u00a0<em><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">Go Home or Die Here: Violence, Xenophobia, and the Reinvention of Difference in South Africa<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Wits University Press, 2008). Her book\u00a0<em><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia',serif;\">Women\u2019s Organizations and Democracy in South Africa: Contesting Authority<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(University of Wisconsin Press, 2006) won the Victoria Shuck Award from the American Political Science Association.
