Dr. Hassim’s lecture, \u201cThe Life of Winnie Mandela: Embodiments of Violence under Racial Capitalism\u201d will take place on Wednesday\u00a0May\u00a02, at 4pm in Communications Room 120. Shireen Hassim is a professor of political studies at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), currently based at WISER (Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research). She has written and edited several books, including\u00a0No Shortcuts to Power: African Women in Politics and Policy Making\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(Zed Books, 2003) and\u00a0Go Home or Die Here: Violence, Xenophobia, and the Reinvention of Difference in South Africa<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Wits University Press, 2008). Her book\u00a0Women\u2019s Organizations and Democracy in South Africa: Contesting Authority<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(University of Wisconsin Press, 2006) won the Victoria Shuck Award from the American Political Science Association. Her most recent book is\u00a0The ANC Women\u2019s League<\/span><\/em>\u00a0(Ohio University Press, 2014).<\/span><\/p>\n
