NIH funding for female scientists

A recent study published by the journal Academic Medicine takes a long, hard look at NIH funding rates for male vs. female PI’s. While

success and funding rates for men and women were not significantly different in most award programs,…

both application and funding rates were generally higher for men than for women

for renewal grants. More disturbingly,

men had more R01 awards than women at all points in their careers.

The NIH Office of Extramural Research has a strangely optimistic view of the data, and furthermore takes the Ceci & Williams stance by explaining away slower career progression for females as “life choices.
