While<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>success and funding rates for men and women were not significantly different in most award programs,&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>both application and funding rates were generally higher for men than for women<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>for renewal grants. More disturbingly,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>men had more R01 awards than women at all points in their careers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/nexus.od.nih.gov\/all\/2011\/03\/18\/you-go-girl\/#comment-1287\">NIH Office of Extramural Research has a strangely optimistic view of the data<\/a>, and furthermore takes the <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/womengs\/wordpress\/2011\/02\/understanding-current-causes-of-women%E2%80%99s-underrepresentation-in-science\/\">Ceci &amp; Williams stance<\/a> by explaining away slower career progression for females as &#8220;life choices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent study published by the journal Academic Medicine takes a long, hard look at NIH funding rates for male vs. female PI&#8217;s.
