{"id":804,"date":"2015-01-27T23:17:37","date_gmt":"2015-01-28T07:17:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/womengs\/wordpress\/?p=804"},"modified":"2015-01-27T23:17:37","modified_gmt":"2015-01-28T07:17:37","slug":"general-exam-prep-qa-notes-from-1815","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/womengs\/wordpress\/2015\/01\/general-exam-prep-qa-notes-from-1815\/","title":{"rendered":"General Exam Prep Q&#038;A &#8212; notes from 1\/8\/15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WiGS hosted its annual General Exam Prep Q&amp;A session on January 8th, with a panel of third- and fourth-years offering tips to the current second-years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you choose your committee members?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can base a committee based on your project or based on your career<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes committee grows organically from collaborations<\/li>\n<li>You can ask for advice beyond your immediate advisor on who should be on your committee<\/li>\n<li>First committee meeting can range from ideas-based to true dress rehearsal<\/li>\n<li>If you have someone hard to schedule, consider adding someone who\u2019s not<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEasy\u201d vs. \u201chard\u201d people on your committee &#8211; not necessarily about the type of questions they ask but what they expect of the student &#8211; want people who will eventually allow you to graduate<\/li>\n<li>If you have a methods or computational project, consider including someone who applies those methods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How much of the decision-making process for who would be on your committee was driven by your PI?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Depends on PI &#8211; can be helpful to have them generate a list<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How and when did you ask your committee members?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s normal to meet with many potential GSRs<\/li>\n<li>Courteous to ask for an in-person meeting in your initial email reaching out<\/li>\n<li>Can mention in the email you know it\u2019s a time commitment; give them an out, not obligated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Additional general advice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure to check all the basic boxes &#8211; print the exam form, send in a short summary and long writeup in time<\/li>\n<li>If there is something important enough to be on a slide, make sure you know everything about it in detail<\/li>\n<li>Include your lab-mates in your preparation &#8211; give a practice talk with plenty of time, talk about the project and hit the big-picture questions<\/li>\n<li>If you are doing anything clinically-based, know the clinical side of it as well<\/li>\n<li>Start writing early, build the written exam gradually over time in bits and pieces<\/li>\n<li>Use this gradual writing time as a check for yourself to make sure everything makes sense<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WiGS hosted its annual General Exam Prep Q&amp;A session on January 8th, with a panel of third- and fourth-years offering tips to the current second-years.
