Protesters Raise Hell in Geneva The
World Trade Organizations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, was the site of an
anti-WTO protest over the weekend. The rally, set to coincide with the opening of the
ministerial meeting in Seattle, drew a crowd of approximately 3,000 environmentalists,
farmers, and activists.
Angered by the negative environmental and social effects of the WTO, the
protesters called for those issues to be discussed when the 135 member countries meet this
week in Seattle. They also demanded that the summit include talks aimed at evaluating the
past performance of the WTO.
While protesters were held back from the entrance of the headquarters, one group
of farmers managed to plant an apple tree on the buildings grounds.
