RECYCLING PLASTIC FROM THE TIP BOXES

 

 

WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED:

 

RED, GREEN AND BLUE INSERTS (flat pieces with 96-holes that come with each stack of tips)

 

ENTIRE EMPTY TIP BOXES AND THEIR LIDS

 

 

WHAT CANNOT BE RECYCLED:

 

CLEAR PLASTIC CONTAINERS THAT THE STACKS COME IN

 

 

WHAT TO DO WITH THE RECYCLABLES:

 

COLLECT IN AN EMPTY BOX (like the ones the stacks of tips arrive in)

Daily Checklist

 

1. Glassware

            Take down all dirty lab glassware, pipettes, test tubes, and bottle caps to glass washing in the basement. Pick up clean glassware, etc, and prepare it for autoclaving, or place it in appropriate storage.

 

2. Media Shelf

            We should always have at least the following number of bottles on the shelf:

á      6 of 1L bottles

á      6 of 100ml bottles      

á      2 100ml bottles of drop our solutions (in fridge)

 

3. Plate Media

            Check to see which dry media flasks have been used and what plates are running low. Following guidelines for plates:

á      2 boxes AMP, YPD, URA-, TRP-, URA-TRP-

á      1 box   HIS-, LEU-, ADE-, AT, etc.

 

4. Sterilizing supplies

á      Glassware       30 min.

á      Liquids            30 min.           

á      Used Plates     30 min.

á      Pipettes           20 min.

 

5. Following items will need to be dried in the drying oven after autoclaving

á      Centrifuge bottles and tubes

á      Cortex tubes

á      Sterile eppendorfs in cardboard containers

á      Sterile velvets

á      Pasteur pipettes in glass containers

á      Òexcessively wetÓ glassware

 

6. Autoclaved item distribution- all items should be distributed equally to both labs, except the following:

á      Cortex tubes, drawer under NatalyÕs bench

á      Sterile velvets, drawer over by KenÕs bench

á      Plastic centrifuge tubes, drawer under ValyaÕs bench

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As Needed Checklist

 

1.         Check supplies of stir bars, spatulas, weigh boats. These will usually require washing at least once a week. Scales should also be cleaned weekly.

 

2.         Dirty velvets over by Juan JoseÕs bench. They will need to be washed, dried, sterilized, etc.

 

3.         Used plates in all rooms. These will need to be autoclaved for 30 minutes and put in the dumpster.

 

4.         Check carboys in both labs and also in the cold room. You should have ½ full carboys of 1xTBE in both labs, ¼ full carboy of SDS gel running buffer, 1/8 full carboy of 10xTris/Glycine solution, Western Transfer buffer, and TBS.

 

            Also need to check Ethanol container.

 

5.         Major supplies/media room used: We should always have extra of the following, especially if the Biochemistry Store closes:

á      Plates

á      Paper towels

á      Kim wipes

á      Soap

á      Aluminum foil

á      Yeast extract

á      Tryptone

á      Gloves

á      Eppendorf tubes

á      Weighing paper

á      Filters

á      Yeast nitrogen w/out aa and SO4

á      Bactopeptone

á      Dextrose

á      Saranwrap

á      EDTA

á      Trizma base

á      Boric acid

 

6.         Check the rest of out supplies weekly. We may need to order tubes/flasks, make new plugs, make special orders, etc. ItÕs a good idea to order anything we are fairly low on.
