Belltown Art Festival Opportunity

Seattle Parks and Recreation The Metropolitan improvement District host a “Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival” in Belltown on September 9th.

We invite artists to create drawings on 10’ x 10’ squares of sidewalk for the event. At the end of the festival, a people’s choice award will determine a winner who will receive a $500 prize.

We are aiming to bring together 30 local artists to cover the sidewalk with chalk drawings on Bell Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue (which will be closed to auto traffic for the day). All chalk pastel drawing materials will be provided to the participants, as well as a buffet style lunch and access to bottled water throughout the day. Artist can draw whatever they choose, we just ask them to be  mindful that this is an all-ages community space. We’d love to feature some artists from your program, and I think this could be a really fun way for them to gain experience working in a community-oriented context. In addition to the artists, we will have some food trucks, buskers and a community sidewalk- drawing area.

The full event details and participation requirements are listed on the site. Please note: participants will need to be available for the duration of the festival: 9AM-7PM on Saturday, September 9th. In case of severe rain, we will ask them to reschedule for Sunday, September 10th.

We are asking that interested students submit the following:

  • 5 images of their work
  • 250 word proposal for the type of image the’d like to draw
  • CV or resume if they have one. A short bio would also suffice. they are encourage to include any relevant experience working at a large scale or with chalk pastel.

Our public call to artists closes August 10th, (quite soon) but we’d be happy to extend the deadline for your students to August 21st as it’s really important to us that the local art schools are represented.  Selected artists will be notified by August 24th.
