Alchemy Art Center | Free 2020 Summer Residency Program

Alchemy Art Center is a nonprofit community studio on San Juan Island. We are currently opening our application process for our 2020 summer residency program. The residency includes rustic housing and access to our Printmaking, Ceramics, and Darkroom Photo studios. The opportunity is free of charge for professional artists who are willing to donate 5 hours per week of their time to the studio. Usually, this time donation takes the form of teaching classes or doing demos and community outreach, though it could vary depending on the applicant’s interests and skills. This is a 1-3 month opportunity during our summer quarter: June 15 to Sept 15

We offer 1, 2, and 3 month Artist Residencies at our center on San Juan Island, between the months of May and September. We offer two types of residence: Teaching Residencies, and Resident Memberships. Artists in Residence stay in rustic accommodations on our beautiful 8 acre forest property.

Our artists in residences, along with our interns, are the public face of the studio and contribute to Alchemy’s magic. They support studio members with their projects, and keep the community spaces inviting.

Accommodations include a large shared kitchen and bathhouse (shared with 6-10). Alchemy hosts a permanent community of 8 people, and the property includes a pond, garden, chickens, cats and a dog.

In addition to the Art Studio, Alchemy features a geodesic dome building available for yoga, meditation, etc.

Artists in Residence share the art facilities with Interns and Studio Members.

Teaching Residencies: Professional artists and art teachers who are interested in teaching are invited to our program free of charge, if they are willing to teach 10 hours per month during their residence. This time is flexible, and based on the strengths of the artist and the needs of Alchemy. This opportunity is extremely competitive.

Resident Memberships: 3 Month Minimum, year-round as available. This is a program for artists who want to develop their skills, or don’t have enough experience to teach. These artists pay 350.00 per month, plus 4 hours per week of volunteer time, for both housing and studio membership.

Applications will be accepted between November 15th and January 15th for our 2020 Residencies. You will be notified of acceptance by January 31.
