Capillaries: The Journal of Narrative Medicine – Call for Winter 2021 Submissions

This is a place for students of all majors and backgrounds to write and create works of art about their experiences with health, illness, and healing. We publish a journal each quarter, and in past editions, we have shared stories of love and loss, of coming to terms with one’s identity, and of understanding what it means to be a global citizen in the 21st century. We at Capillaries: The Journal of Narrative Medicine believe that writing and art have real power now more than ever, to help us unpack our thoughts. Thus, we offer our journal to you as a space to decompress and reflect on personal, community, national, and global issues.

Our Philosophy

Rather than relying on a system that simply “accepts” or “rejects” submissions for the journal, we strive to be as all-encompassing as possible. Our goal is to encourage and empower writers and artists to voice their stories and ideas.
Our editing team will review each submission carefully and will provide feedback to the writer/artist. We aim for the editing process to be a two-way dialogue. We will inform the writers if grammatical changes need to be made and will provide suggestions for content and structure; however, we also wish to respect the stylistic choices of the authors and to honor the stories/ideas in their authentic form.
We will NOT, however, accept content that is sexually explicit, discriminatory to any group based on race/ethnicity/nationality/sexual orientation/gender identity/ability, or that reveals personal details about a person without their consent (please abide by HIPAA regulations: www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-professionals/security/laws-regulations/index.html).
