OPEN CALL FOR LATINX PERFORMANCE ARTISTS
On the Edge: Latinx Performance Art Festival is coming to King Street Station in the historic Pioneer Square district of Seattle on Thursday, June 4, 2020 – Saturday, June 6, 2020! On the Edge seeks artists who identify as Latino/a/x and embraces an intersectional approach. Individuals and small groups are invited to propose a 30-minutes or less, new/remounted work and be prepared to do 2 performances throughout the festival weekend, as well as potentially participate in a panel discussion about their art careers.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, at all stages of career, local, regional, national and international artists with the ability to cover own transportation and accommodation. National and International (artists/artist teams must be able to get to and from the venue in Seattle, WA, as well as finding lodging and nourishment, while at the three day event + at least one day of practice-setup.)
Performance artists who cannot attend the event are encouraged to submit video documentation of their previous work, which will be displayed throughout the festival.

Open Call for Entry by the On The Edge Curatorial Committee.
Selected artists will receive up to $400 for participation in the event and/or $100 for showing video representation of your performance history at the event.
High quality photography and videography will be provided. Artists will be filmed at the event and will be given the raw footage of their performance.
Eligibility for artist applicant must/can:
• Be 18 years of age and over
• Work in performance or film/media artist
• Submit artistic resume and work sample (see limitations)
• Be in any stage of development: emerging, mid-career or established
• Be local, regional, national or international
• Able to cover own transportation/airfare, accommodations and meals
Selected artists will
• Be compensated $400 for performance(s)
• Be compensated $100 for film screenings
• Arrange own transportation to/from performance venue
• Attend at least one rehearsal
Performances, audience and engagement will be documented by photographer and videographer.
Event Background:
In 2016, I put my dreams into action by programming an evening of performance art for La Sala Latinx Artists Network’s ‘La Cocina’ in Pioneer Square. I co-curated “On the Edge: Latinx Performance Art Festival,” with Lauren Davis, Assistant Director at ArtXchange Gallery. This collaborative project was the first all-Latinx night of performance art. The Festival led to us becoming part of university curricula across the globe when Marvin Carlson mentioned our event in Routledge’s textbook “Performance: A Critical Introduction,” “There is a growing body of…artists who specifically identify themselves as Latinx, headed by…Xavier Lopez…featured in the first festival of Latinx performance, held at the Good Arts center…in Seattle… Latinx represents an important orientation in modern performance… concern(ed) with developing more inclusive and flexible attitudes toward designations of gender, race, and ethnicity…addressing this major reorientation of the field.”
The first On the Edge Festival was a one-night event, small but expansive, dedicated to serving Seattle and the Seattle Latinx community, giving voice to local Latinx Artists presenting work that is rarely seen in our communities. Our night of performance was fundamentally Latina/o/x, and part of a larger conversation currently redefining the nature of Latino performance moving forward. The second edition of On the Edge is fully-funded and scheduled for June 2020 and will be hosted by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture at the historic King Street Station.
