Summer paid student internship: Field research and photodocumentation for Arts-Sciences collaboration
We are looking for a summer intern for the arts-sciences project “Learning Endings,” led by Patty Chang, Astrida Neimanis and Aleksija Neimanis. This project is using arts-based research methods to explore the work of scientific necropsy in relation to stranded marine mammals. More broadly, it is interested in what these deaths can teach us about the lives of these animals, and about the entangled futures of humans and oceans. These ocean-dwelling animals are mostly hidden from humans during their lifetimes, but in a stranding death, they reveal themselves to us, and call on us to care. We ask: what might this care look like?
The student’s role will primarily involve:
-two monthly field visits to Lincoln Park (West Seattle) for observation and documentation in June, July and August 2022
-monthly meetings with Learning Endings researchers to discuss observations (in person and on ZOOM)
Ideally, orientation for the summer student, the first site visit, and the June monthly meeting will take place between 7-10 June, when two of the lead researchers will be visiting Seattle.
Qualifications:
-interest in marine flora and fauna, from artistic and/or scientific perspectives
-access to phone or digital camera
-ability to travel to Lincoln Park twice monthly
-experience in artistic or scientific photodocumentation is an asset.
Note, Lincoln Park has an asphalted road that can accommodates a variety of mobility devices. The shoreline, where some of the documentation will take place, is located 5-10 meters off of this path, and may require stepping over driftwood and uneven stones.
Remuneration & Duration
$30/hr, approximately 8 hrs/month, June – August.
