For complete information on visas,
visit the U.S. State Department's visa web site.

For additional helpful information specific to attending professional conferences, visit the National Academies' International Visitors web site. (NOTE: This is not a U.S. Government site. Consult the U.S. State Department for the most current regulations.)

ARRIVING IN SEATTLE

Travelers to Seattle are served by the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Sea-Tac airport is a major transport hub with direct or connecting flights to virtually all major international cities.

From the Asia-Pacific region non-stop flights are available to/from Seoul (Asiana Airlines), Tokyo (Northwest Airlines, United Airlines) and Taipei (China Airlines, EVA Airways). Service between Seattle and other Asian-Pacific cities typically includes an easy connection through Los Angeles, San Francisco or Vancouver (Canada).

GETTING FROM THE AIRPORT

To get to the University District, travellers arriving at Sea-Tac Airport can choose among several local transport options:

TAXI - The most direct, but also most expensive option. The fare to the University District is usually around $40.

SHUTTLE - Airport shuttle vans run between Sea-Tac and destinations throughout the greater Seattle area. Shuttle Express offers a shared-ride service to the University District that costs around $25, less for more than one rider.

BUS - Public bus routes 174 and 194 run between the airport and downtown Seattle. The fare for either is $1.25 (off-peak hours) or $2.00 (peak hours)--exact change required. Pay the fare and ask for a transfer when you get on the bus. NOTE: Be sure to get on a bus marked "Downtown Seattle," not "Federal Way."
Route 194 (approximately 30 minute to downtown) runs between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. and is an express bus. When the downtown bus tunnel is open: Get off at the International District station and change to route 71, 72 or 73. All three routes run express to the University District, just a few blocks from the UW campus and the conference hotels. When the bus tunnel is closed: Get off on 3rd Avenue and change to route 71, 72 or 73.

Route 174 (approximately 50 minutes to downtown) is a local bus. Upon reaching downtown Seattle, get off at 4th Avenue and Cherry Street. When the downtown bus tunnel is open: Walk 1 block west to 3rd Avenue and enter the bus tunnel at the Pioneer Square station (entrance at 3rd and Cherry).
Change to route 71, 72 or 73. All three routes run express to the University District, just a few blocks from the UW campus and the conference hotels. When the bus tunnel is closed: Get off at 4th Avenue and Union Street. Walk 1 block west to 3rd Avenue and change to route 71, 72 or 73.
To get more information and to see the current schedules and route maps, go to the King County Metro web page and enter the route number in the "Timetables" box.
