The Washington State Booster
Seat Coalition was founded in 2000 to help increase the use
of booster seats among preschoolers and young children in Washington
State. Initially funded in large part by a grant from the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Coalition strives
to raise public awareness about booster seats, to engage in
research studies to help understand adoption rates and barriers
to booster seat use, and to improve access to booster seats
for families. The Booster Seat Coalition is comprised of healthcare
professionals, childcare providers and educators, traffic safety
experts, advocates from government agencies, and private interests
in Washington State.
Key Goals of Coalition
- Increase the use of belt-positioning booster seats among
Washington preschoolers and young children 4-8 years old.
- Generate awareness of Washington's landmark child passenger
safety law that requires the use of booster seats amongst
children up to age 6 or 60 pounds. This law went into effect
on July 1, 2002.
- Understand the barriers to access for families and help
develop programs to overcome these obstacles.
- Establish a multi-faceted education program that can serve
as a model for other communities.
- Understand the needs of and develop targeted programs for
the needs of Washington's diverse families and cultural groups.
