Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Lecture
Nursing Science and Practice: Working Together to Benefit Patients and Communities by Dr. Joan Shaver
4:30 – 6:00 p.m., Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall
This year’s lecture will feature Dr. Joan Shaver, Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Arizona and Dean Emeritus, University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Shaver was with the University of Washington, Seattle from 1985 to 1996, where she was co-director of the Center for Women's Health Research and chair and professor of the Department of Physiological Nursing (renamed Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems in 1995).
For more than 20 years, Dr. Shaver has conducted funded research in women's health and sleep science, publishing her scientific work in nursing, medical, and interdisciplinary journals. Her scientific scholarship encompasses sleep issues for women in menopausal transition and in women with fatiguing health conditions, mainly fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
As a distinguished researcher and educator and past President of the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. Joan Shaver brings a valuable perspective to the important relationship between nursing science and practice.
Established in 1979, the Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Lecture honors the founding dean of the UW School of Nursing. The annual presentation features prominent nursing and health care leaders and is supported through the Elizabeth Sterling Soule Endowed Fund.
