History At the University of Washington, the Canadian Studies Program was founded by Professor Douglas Jackson of the Department of Geography in 1985. A well published scholar born and raised in Toronto, he brought an indigenous and academically sophisticated presence to the foundation of the program. Funded by the federal Department of Education, the University of Washington Canadian Studies Program and Center evolved into a partnership with Western Washington University as a National Resource Center for the Study of Canada. As the Principal Investigator, The Director of the Canadian Studies Center administers the federal grant. The Director is also the Chair of the Canadian Studies Program. For more than a decade, the Canadian Studies Center and Program at the University of Washington have been funded by the federal Department of Education and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Under Professor Jackson's tutelage, the Canadian Studies program evolved into a rigorous and demanding Liberal Arts curriculum. Under the guidance of his successor, Professor Anthony B. Chan, the program has evolved to meet the demands of a multicultural and technologically-advanced Canada with an expansion of its language requirements to include languages other than French and the introduction of courses that emphasize advertising and public relations, electronic writing and the website.
