Periodically the UW Design Division conducts a survey of our alumni from the programs of Visual Communication Design, Industrial Design and Interaction Design. The 2008–2013 survey of B. Design alumni from Industrial Design was conducted online and received a 83% response rate (87 out of 105 graduates). UW ID Student Statistics

Graduating Class Size

Over the past six years, the average size of the graduating class in Industrial Design has been 18 students. Gray bars indicate student attrition.

Race and Ethnicity

Nearly half of all ID students are Asian (48%), and 37% are Caucasian. Other ethnicities account for the remaining 15% of students.

Gender Ratio

ID has traditionally been a male-dominated field, but the UW ID program is almost evenly divided between males and females.

Average Age at Graduation

The average age of ID students at graduation is 26. This average has been relatively consistent over the past six years.

Initial Employment
After Graduation

The first job after graduation may be a full-time position, a design internship, or contract/freelance design work.

Use of Placement Agencies

Approximately one quarter of ID alumni have worked with a design employment agency after graduation.

Time Until Initial Employment

Half of all ID alumni find employment within three months after graduation; 81% secure employment within one year of graduation.

Of 105 alumni, 84 are currently employed (three alumni are unemployed, and 18 could not be contacted).

Disciplinary Focus

Approximately half of all ID alumni work in the field. About one third (30%) work in the design industry as visual communication or interaction designers.

Location Before and After Graduation

The majority (80% = 70/87) of ID students are from Washington state. After graduation, most alumni (67% = 58/87) remain in Washington, with 38% staying in Seattle. A small group (11%) of alumni have relocated to California (primarily San Francisco and Los Angeles), and 5% have relocated to New York City.
