NATIONAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS CASE COMPETITION: With EY’s sponsorship, the ISOM Department is able to promote and recruit students to represent the University of Washington at a national competition in 2015-2016. This funding renews an opportunity EY started last academic year for our students. |
BUSINESS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SOCIETY (BITS): Working in Information Systems has become a top career option for Foster School students. The inaugural Information Systems Banquet was held on May 28, 2015 at the UW Bank of America Building and was well attended by Information Systems students, faculty, and professionals. Two keynote speakers delivered powerful and insightful speeches. The first speaker was Gilad Berenstein, founder and CEO of Utrip – a Seattle startup that has been gaining a lot of traction. His speech focused on the “Startup Mentality,” what it takes and how he got there, which he proved recently when Mr. Berenstein was presented with the “2015 Geekwire Award for Young Entrepreneur of the Year.” The second speech was delivered by Kelly Burke, an EY Risk Assurance Executive Director. Her empowering speech centered around “A Day in the Life of an IS Professional.” Ms. Burke stressed the importance of a hard work ethic, what motivates her, why she loves her job, and how she empowers her team around her. After the keynote speeches, Shannon Ong, President of BITS, made a few concluding statements and opened the floor up for networking. – story by Shannon Ong, BITS President |
Operations & Supply Chain Management Club OSCM CLUB |

Undergraduate students toured the BOEING facility in Everett, WA on May 15. Eric Hutchinson (center), a Methods Process Analyst and OSCM alumni, lead the students on a VIP tour of the facility floor to see the supply chain process at work. |
|
Spring 2015 quarter marked the revival of the Operations & Supply Chain Management Club. Since the induction of new leadership in March, OSCM held eight networking and information meetings with companies recognized for supply chain excellence, including Carlisle Interconnect Technologies, Boeing, Best Buy Asia, Ericsson, and Honeywell Aerospace. Perhaps OSCM’s most beneficial and eye-opening events were field trips to see supply chain operations systems at work in Carlisle, Boeing (pictured above) and Honeywell’s manufacturing facilities. The OSCM Club has success stories already, like junior David Selover, who got his summer internship with Carlisle’s highly competitive supply chain leadership program by networking at OSCM’s events. To quote Clay Schwenn, Assistant Director of Student Leadership & Development at Foster, OSCM came back “like a phoenix rising from the ashes.” If this first quarter is any indication, OSCM isn’t just rising; it’s flying. – story by Sarah Ma, OSCM Club President |
