Part of the University of Washington, UW Medicine works to improve the health of the public by advancing medical knowledge, providing outstanding primary and speciality medical care to people of the region, and preparing tomorrow's physicians, scientists, and other health professionals.

Leader in Biomedical Research UW School of Medicine ranks first among public medical schools in federal research funding and second among all medical schools. In fiscal year 2003, UW Medicine faculty received $488.5 million in National Institutes of Health research awards and an estimated $165 million from private foundations, industry, and other federal and non-federal sources.

Innovator in Education Ranked as top medical school for 11 consecutive years in training primary-care physicians, the UW has top-ranked academic programs in family medicine and rural health. WWAMI, and acronym for Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, is a model of community-based training of medical students and residents and of interstate collaboration in medical education. UW Medicine enrolls 790 medical students, 563 graduate students in the basic sciences, 1,114 residents, 327 clinical fellows, 711 research fellows, 155 physician assistant students, and 190 allied-health students. The medical school has a full-time faculty of 1,761 and volunteer clinical faculty numbering about 4,500 throught the WWAMI region. Nationally Recognized for Paient Care UW Medicine had 37,000 hospital admissions and almost 1 million outpatient and emergency room visits per year. Provides 60 percent of hospital charity care in King County and 33 percent of the total statewide. Provides 50 percent of hospital care for Medicaid recipients in King County and 20 percent of total statewide. Harborview Medical Center has the only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center in the state, serves as disaster control center for King County, and is the designated White House receiving hospital. University of Washington Medical Center ranks 9th among America's best hospitals, accordiing to U.S.News & world Report. |
