Topic:

"Eurosurveillance":

Monitoring Disease in the European Union

Presenter: Dr. Chris Bartlett

Dr Chris Bartlett is Director of the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC) in London. He is also a visiting professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He has launched and co-ordinated several of the surveillance efforts in the European Union. Several surveillance networks in Europe have managed to negotiate sharing of information and surveillance that works very well for many infectious diseases occurring in the European Union.

INTRODUCTION

The European Union (EU) is 15 countries at the moment, comprising a population of about 350 million. There are plans to expand the EU and another 6 countries are likely to join in the next few years. CDSC concentrates solely on communicable diseases. We are part of a service, the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS), which includes microbiologists and epidemiologists, and 50 laboratories scattered around the country. They are called public health laboratories, but they also do the clinical diagnostic work for their localities, for hospital practice, community practice and primary care. The largest laboratories in the country generally are part of the PHLS. The integration of epidemiology and microbiology is powerful when it works well, underpinning surveillance and response.

Presentation Objectives:

  • To set the context for the development of surveillance in Europe.
  • · To describe the process by which it has been taken forward
  • Define effective systems later
  • To speak about planning future developments.
