Topic:

Emergence from Animals and Birds: BSE and Avian Influenza

Presenter: Dr. Corrie Brown

Dr. Corrie Brown is a Professor and Head of the Department of Pathology at University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine.

I strongly believe that when it comes to emerging diseases and public health, everyone needs to work together. We need lots of multi-disciplinary teams, and I believe that veterinarians have a big contribution to make to this team. I am always beating this drum within my own discipline that emerging diseases have so much to do with veterinarian medicine that we cannot leave it to the epidemiologists or infectious diseases specialists. We really need to give our input.

This presentation is about diseases that have crossed species boundaries, in particular those that are of veterinary interest. I am going to present a few of these diseases, and then focus on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and avian influenza for the bulk of our session. At the end I would like to give some projections about what we might see in the future with diseases crossing species boundaries.
