Topic:

Emerging Infections: The Role Of Antibiotic Resistance

Presenter: Carrie Horwitch, MD, MPH

The objectives of today's discussion is to:
  1. Understand the factors that contribute to antibiotic resistance.
  2. Study specific organisms and their resistance patterns
  3. Discuss prevention and control strategies to decrease antibiotic resistance and its sequelae.
During today's discussion we will look at the historical perspective of antibiotics and resistance, define the different mechanisms of resistance, talk about the factors which contribute to resistance and what we can do. For those who have an interest in this topic I recommend reading Dr. Stuart Levy's book, "The Antibiotic Paradox". Some of the information for this lecture was taken from this book and other relevant research articles.
