Flegg A. Inequality of income, illiteracy, and medical care as determinants of infant mortality in developing countries. Population Studies 1982; 36: 441-58

This paper follows on the initial study by Rodgers, looking at infant mortality, trying to understand the wide variation among developing countries. A variety of measures of income distribution are considered, along with other factors. It is concluded that income distribution and women's literacy are key factors in producing a rapid fall in infant mortality rates. Medical care is not found to be such an important factor.
