Tempered martensite

Back to Case study
Tempered martensite Lesson/Tutorial  When a steel alloy is quenched, or rapidly cooled from the austenite temperature, martensite (BCT phase) is formed.  Since martensite is too brittle to be used in most applications, further tempering allows the alloy to begin to soften via diffusion.  The result is tempered martensite, which is composed of stable ferrite and cementite phases.
