FOSTER SCHOOL

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Available
For the second year, the Accounting Department is hosting a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in Mackenzie Hall (Room 132)  from now through the tax filing deadline in mid-April.  The site will be staffed by UW MS Tax students, who will prepare free tax returns three days a week through the tax deadline in April.  The site will operate Mondays and Wednesdays 4-7pm and Fridays 12-3pm. All volunteers are certified by the IRS.  Anyone who earns less than $66,000 per year is eligible (although the site does turn away some people with especially complex tax issues).

Last year, in our inaugural 2017 on-campus VITA campaign, student volunteers provided tax assistance to 700 taxpayers in King County. In addition to receiving adept tax assistance, these taxpayers also received tax refunds of approximately $1 million. New this year, the UW site is equipped to prepare tax returns for international students.

If you’d like to get your taxes done, stop by anytime with your social security card (or a copy of it) and any tax forms you’ve received. No appointment necessary!

The UW Counseling Center and Hall Health - Let's Talk

What Is Let’s Talk?
The UW Counseling Center and Hall Health are starting a pilot project, and connecting with the Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center (ECC) and the Q Center to offer drop-in consultation with a counselor. Let’s Talk is a program that connects UW students with support from experienced counselors from the Counseling Center and Hall Health Center, without an appointment. Counselors hold walk-in hours at two sites on campus.
Talking with a counselor can help provide insight, solutions, and information about other resources.  Let’s Talk drop-in visits are:

  • Free
  • Confidential
  • No appointment necessary

Is Let’s Talk the right choice for me?
There is no wrong reason to seek counseling through Let’s Talk, the Counseling Center, or Hall Health Center. However, Let’s Talk is an especially good fit for students who:

  • Are not sure about counseling and wonder what it’s like to talk with a counselor
  • Are not interested in ongoing counseling but would like the perspective of a counselor
  • Have a specific problem and would like someone with whom to talk it through
  • Have a concern about a friend and want some thoughts about what to do
