Pre-arrival Requirements

  • Please contact Kelly Juarez in the Spokane WWAMI office to find out about other pre-arrival paperwork requirements.
  • Proof of COVID vaccination from the student.  A student that has received an exemption from their school will still be required to apply for exemption through MultiCare.
  • Drug screen:  Standard panel drug test through the UWSOM is required. The requirement is that only one drug test must be completed during your medical school career.

What To Bring & Orientation

Equipment to bring: White coat and name tag, reflex hammer, tuning fork (128Hz), stethoscope, (ophthalmoscope recommended).

First day & site orientation: Your main contact person will be Dr. Jon Ween 509-828-0732. Meet with Dr. Ween in his office at 08:00 the first day of your rotation.

Course Requirements

Course requirements are listed below. Refer to the Distance Learning page for due dates.

Cases: Two case write-ups are due each week. Further information is available in the orientation video and on the Cases page. Your assigned case numbers are on the Distance Learning page. Please note that your assigned case numbers are different than for the Seattle-based students. Weekly case answers and video lectures will be available on the Distance Learning page on Thursdays after 1PM.

Patient log: You are required to log in the patients you have seen each week. The log is described in the clerkship orientation video. Additional details are on the Patient Log page.

Clinical & Bioethical Mini-CEX exercises: You are required to do both a clinical and a bioethical mini-CEX for this course. See the Mini-CEX page for details.

Presentations: Presentation requirements are described in the orientation video and are available on the Presentations page.

Final exam: Your final exam will be held in Spokane unless you tell the clerkship director otherwise.  The scheduling/notification process runs through UW Testing Services and the contact email is This email address is being protected from spambots. Site Expectations & Clinic Experience

GENERAL

Welcome! We are pleased to have you with us for your neurology clerkship. We hope you have a rewarding and interesting time with us. Your input and feedback is key not only to your own success but also to that of others following you. Please feel free to comment, suggest, encourage. We appreciate it.

Students are expected to spend five days per week at the MultiCare Clinic or Deaconess Medical Center unless closed.

For directions, click to see the pdf map. While at RWC you can park in the main lot. There are “physician” designated spaces on the south side of the clinic. These are dedicated and not free to all. Don’t park there. While at Deaconess, in lots C, I, M (see map) if you place a copy of your badge on your dash. You can park in any garage lot after 15:00.

Professional dress and nametags are required, though white coats are not.

Grand rounds and journal club meet once a month. Dates/times to be arranged as we are in the process of revising our schedule.

CLINIC AND HOSPITAL EXPERIENCE

Dr. Ween is the clerkship site director. He will observe student’s performance and provide feedback. Work with the clinicians on your skills and knowledge set. As you progress, we will find ways for you to assess patients on your own at a rate commensurate with your abilities/interest. Remember to take notes and look things up.
