The New York City Urban Fellows Program introduces America’s finest college graduates to local
government and public service. The program was initiated in
1969, with the hope of offering aspiring public policymakers the
opportunity to grapple firsthand with contemporary urban issues. For eligibility and application information, check the fellowship flyer. Application deadline: January 11th, 2008.
Course Offerings
MTWTH 12:00-2:10, 5 W credits, SLN: 13624 Mike Henderson, 543-0585, mikh@u.washinqton.edu Office: CMU 341 Office hours: MW 9:00-9:40 & by appt. Description: Writing for Mass Media is designed not only to help students write better but to instruct them about the various ways professional writers communicate. The course will recognize that there are numerous and varied career opportunities to use communications skills and that those opportunities are and will be expanding. The course is a writing workshop, meaning that students will produce written work in and out of class on a regular basis. They also will be required to discuss writing during class sessions. Outside assignments will include writing to inform and persuade. Toward the end of the quarter students will practice writing cover letters and resumes with the goal of being prepared to present themselves in the job market. Grading: Students will not be graded for individual assignments. Instead, they will be apprised of their general grade progress at mid-quarter and at the end of the quarter. Grading by necessity will be subjective. Students who show considerable improvement and willingness to work and learn will receive the best grades. Classroom attendance will not be optional, and students who miss class sessions will be down-graded accordingly. Students also will be encouraged to read more widely and to build their spoken and written vocabularies. They will be given 10 vocabulary words each Wednesday and will be expected to return vocabulary sheets the following Wednesdays with the words defined and used in sentences. Students will be given folders for storing their work. At the end of the quarter the completed portfolios will be given to the students after the instructor has made a final review of progress. Please have a comprehensive, up-to-date dictionary and a copy of the Associated Press Stylebook.
