Spring 2013

Alumni Spotlight

Peter MayWe are very fortunate to have such an esteemed set of alumni.  Hardly a day goes by without one of our alumni receiving praise for past accomplishments or new endeavors.  We plan to share such news in future issues of our E-Newsletter.  We encourage you to send news about recent accomplishments by writing us at polsnews@uw.edu

As part of the University of Washington College of Arts and Sciences’ 150th anniversary, the College selected 150 alumni to receive a Timeless Award to celebrate their contributions and accomplishments. Fifteen of our alumni received this honor, the largest group within the College. One recent PhD and two recent undergraduates were designated future Timeless Award winners based on their exceptional accomplishments as students and their future promise. A profile of each Timeless Award winner can be found here.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award, presented at our Spring Convocation, is our primary recognition of alumni. State Supreme Court Justice Bobbe Bridge was the first recipient of this award in 2002.  Subsequent awardees and their positions at the time of the award have been Michael S. McGavick, former president of Safeco Corporation; Robert D. Kaplan, a prominent Seattle attorney; Gary D. Gayton, a noted advocate for civil rights; John E. Carlson, a popular talk radio host; Bruce A. Harrell, a member of the Seattle City Council, Maralyn Chase, a member of the State Legislature; John McKay, former U.S. Attorney for Western Washington; Barbara Madsen, Chief Justice of the Washington State Supreme Court; Dow Constantine, King County Executive; and Meeghan Black, host of King TV's Evening Magazine and Gardening with Cisco show.  Profiles of these recipients can be found at here

The Distinguished Alumnus for 2013 will be Norm Dicks who retired at the end of the 112th Congress after representing the 6th Congressional District in Washington for 36 years.
