Climate change is in many ways an ethical issue. Still, there has been little discussion of the ethics of climate change in academia or by the general public (especially relative to the science and policy dimensions). This conference aims to encourage and facilitate such a discussion. Accordingly, it will focus on topics such as the ethical responsibilities of scientists, obligations to future generations, and the intersection between climate change, global justice and human rights. The conference will take place May 3-4, 2007, at the University of Washington, and will involve presentations by internationally-renowned philosophers, scientists, and political theorists. The Keynote Addresses will be delivered by Henry Shue (Politics and International Relations, Oxford University) and Dale Jamieson (Environmental Studies and Philosophy, New York University). REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED! Thank you for your interest; we hope you will join us for the keynote addresses (no registration necessary). The conference is a joint project of the Program on Values in Society and the Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs. Jeff Kiehl’s participation is supported by the Department of Atmospheric Sciences and the Program on Climate Change. Gavin Schmidt’s participation is supported by the Tamaki Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Program on the Environment, U.W. Earth Initiative, Department of Philosophy, the Dean’s Office of the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Political Science, and the Simpson Center for the Humanities. |
