Max Lieblich

Max Lieblich is a Professor in the math department at the University of Washington. Raised in Highland Park, IL, he earned his BA from Harvard and PhD from MIT, spent a year as an NSF postdoc at Brown, and taught at Princeton for four years before coming to UW. His mathematical research is about algebraic geometry and its interactions with noncommutative algebra and number theory, but he has started dipping some of his toes into human motion analysis and computer vision.

Twenty years ago, Max thought he would be a cellist. The peak of his musical career was a solo performance in Chicago's Orchestra Hall with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. In graduate school, his string quartet made it to the quarterfinals of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, but they were smart enough to check out of their hotel before the semifinalists were announced. He still plays, but the audiences are smaller now and they usually wear earplugs
