Bianca Viray is an associate professor in the mathematics department at UW. Her research focuses on the interplay between geometry and arithmetic, mainly studying how the geometry of complex solutions to polynomial equations affects the existence of rational solutions.

Bianca liked math when she was young, but didn't even begin to get a glimpse of how much cool math there was to learn until she was an undergraduate at the University of Maryland. After realizing that and learning that it was possible to get a job doing math research, there was no turning back. She went on to obtain a B.S. in mathematics from Maryland, studying at the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics along the way, and then a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in 2010. She spent 4 years at Brown University, and then moved to the University of Washington where she has been since 2014.
