The last day of Student Program. The closing ceremony was attended by parents, University of Washington faculty, and staff of Consulate General of Russia. We truly enjoyed working with our students and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

After 4 weeks of individual studies guided by experienced instructors, STARTALK students presented their projects in linguistics, history, and media. Experts from Russian community, University of Washington faculty, and STARTALK alumni were invited to evaluate their work. Congratulations to Polina Kosykh (linguistics), Artem Astapchuk (history), and Oleksiy Petrenko (media) who will present their projects during the closing ceremony that will take place at 121 Raitt Hall on August 7.

First day of our Student Program. After getting acquainted, the students participated in exciting discussion about space exploration facilitated by Dr. Svetlana Abramova. The day ended with the initial assessment of the students' Russian proficiency levels provided by the ACTFL AAPPL.

STARTALK offers a workshop open to any and all K-12 World Language Teachers:
TPEP (Teacher and Principal Evaluation Project) and World Languages, presented by Lynn Johnston

July 15, 2014 1:00 - 4:00 pm, UW (location TBA)

Outcomes: Teachers are familiarized with the eight criteria in the new Washington Teacher Evaluation process. Ideas, activities, and projects will be presented for each of the eight criteria. Critical attributes for each of the criterion will be discussed, collection of evidence and artifacts will be demonstrated, and examples of how to move from a 3 (proficient) to a 4 (distinguished) will be provided.

The University of Washington has just received news from STARTALK Central at the National Foreign Language Center in Maryland that our proposal, “Russian in the Sky and in Outer Space and Preparing Language Teachers for the 21st Century” has been selected for funding as part of the STARTALK 2015 program. Registration coming by early March.

STARTALK Russian Student Program Alumni:

You're invited to come back to the UW for a special opportunity to meet other Russian heritage speakers (and students of Russian), view a great Russian film, hear a brief presentation about the historical context of the film, and participate in a post-film discussion in person and online. (Participants who complete the online discussion forum will receive a special STARTALK Certificate). Invite your family and friends to come too! We'll have refreshments and it's FREE. Put your Russian to good use and have fun at the same time.
