  • Evidence has shown that surgeries date back to the Neolithic Age (History of Surgery).

The practice of surgery has been dated to be over 3000 years old (Streten).

  • No one knows exactly where surgery originated but many believe that the first surgeries were performed in Ancient Egypt, India, Greece, and Rome. It is also believed that ancient surgeons were doctors and priests. They used conventional medicine as well as ritual and prayers. Though their tools were much more primitive than what is used today, they were still able to perform successful surgeries. There is much evidence to support the idea that the Egyptians were the first to perform brain surgery (Streten).
  • The oldest evidenced surgery was known as treppanation. Trepannation is drilling a hole into the patient’s skull to relieve pressure, fluids, etc. It might sound crazy, but prehistorical evidence has proven that many of the patient’s skulls, after the surgery, were healed.
  • Sushruta who is regarded as the world’s first surgeon was an Indian physician who authored Susrutha Samhit around 600 B.C.  Susrutha Samhita is considered mans oldest surgical text.  Sushruta is known as the "Father of Surgery".  Many techniques which he fathered are still in use today. One example is how plastic surgeons reconstruct the nose and nasal cavities (Surgery).
