Some typical graffiti in ancient times were inscriptions and figure drawings. This graffiti was usually found on ancient walls or ruins like the Catacombs of Rome or at Pompeii. The Safaitic language is actually a language that came from graffiti. This language was spoken in southern Syria, eastern Jordan, and Northern Saudi Arabia. This language took place from 1st century BC to the 4th century AD. The first works of “modern art” came from Ephesus, which is now Turkey. The works of graffiti was meant to advertise prostitution. The graffiti made to advertise, showed a heart with a footprint and a number.
The Romans used to carve their graffiti on walls and monuments. For example, some of the graffiti in Pompeii included curses in Latin, magic spells, love declarations, slogans concerning politics and famous quotes. They would write on the walls of the buildings that they conquered. French soldiers used to carve their names on monuments during the Napoleonic campaign that took place in Egypt during the 1790’s.
