Biography

This is the map of Southeast Asia and the one that is highlighted is Vietnam where I was born. The neighboring countries near it are Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. Cambodia and Thailand is where I also use to live.

This is the flag of Vietnam.

My name is Sony Thach and I was born on October 15, 1980 in Vietnam, the year of the monkey. When I was about five or six years old, my mom and I left Vietnam for Cambodia. We stayed in Cambodia for about six months and then my brother Samon came to join us. We stayed in Cambodia for about two years in all, then we left Cambodia for Thailand because of the war. We got to Thailand by foot, and let me tell you it is a long hard walk. But we did okay because we survived in one piece. If you look at other people, some got their legs or arms cut off, some got killed, while other lost their whole family and you were the only one left.

I have four brothers and one sister. My other two brothers just came from Vietnam and one of them is a monk. He is not staying at home, he is staying in the temple at South Park. Monks are not allowed to touch ladies or women, but they can touch little girls, or women in their family. Right now I am a Freshmen, but next year I will be a Sophomore. I go to Cleveland High School, near Beacon Hill and I live in West Seattle.

I believe in Buddhism

Below are the four Noble Truths that I believe in. If you do any thing that is sinful in this life, your next life will be full of sorrow because the sin that you have done, follows you, until you do something to pay for that sin. The following is from Encarta 95!

The Four Noble Truths

At the core of the Buddha's enlightenment was the realization of the Four Noble Truths: (1) Life is suffering. This is more than a mere recognition of the presence of suffering in existence. It is a statement that, in its very nature, human existence is essentially painful from the moment of birth to the moment of death. Even death brings no relief, for the Buddha accepted the Hindu idea of life as cyclical, with death leading to further rebirth. (2) All suffering is caused by ignorance of the nature of reality and the craving, attachment, and grasping that result from such ignorance. (3) Suffering can be ended by overcoming ignorance and attachment. (4) The path to the suppression of suffering is the Noble Eightfold Path, which consists of right views, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right-mindedness, and right contemplation. These eight are usually divided into three categories that form the cornerstone of Buddhist faith: morality, wisdom, and samadhi, or concentration.

Wheel of Life

The Wheel of Life, also known as the Wheel of Law, depicts the cyclical nature of life according to Buddhism. In the wall painting above, the artist shows the animal which represents death holding the wheel. The three cardinal sins, depicted in symbolic form, make up the center of the wheel. The cock symbolizes passion, the pig stupidity, and the snake hatred. Surrounding the sins are those who fall prey to bad karma on the right, and those with good karma on the left. The six spheres of existence make up the next circle. The Wheel, like the Buddha's search for truth, culminates in the outermost circle, which depicts the 12 links in the chain of causation.

Interests/Hobbies

Like I have already said, my interests are anything that have to do with other people's cultures because I like to learn about other people, especially Asian.

My hobbies are: Reading, working on the computer, learning traditional dances of Cambodia, playing sports outdoors like basketball and baseball, and I also know how to play chess.

This is the kind of dances that I want to learn. It is kind of hard to learn because you need to move your head and arms at the same time and your whole body needs to be flexible.

Music

The kind of music that I like is soft music and any music that is soft no matter if it is in English, Cambodian, or Thai; I like them all. And I also like traditional music of Cambodia.
