Hall Health Center Executive Director Announcement

January 12, 2015

Dear UW colleagues,

After a nationwide search involving an extremely qualified group of candidates, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Mark Jenkins will be the new Executive Director of Hall Health Center at the University of Washington, effective early March 2015.

Dr. Jenkins earned his B.A. in Biochemistry at Rice University and his M.D. at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston. Since 1998, Dr. Jenkins has served as the Director of Student Health at Rice University. He has experience as Chair of the Institutional Review Board and as Associate Team Physician for NCAA sports at Rice University. Early in his career, Dr. Jenkins recognized that the ideal mission of a campus health center extended beyond excellent clinical care and leveraged opportunities to promote community health and further the mission of the university as a whole. With experience in health and wellness facility development and Lean process improvement strategies, he characterizes his leadership style as “rooted in positive influence, communication and collaboration”. He recognizes that University health centers are facing numerous challenges and opportunities and he looks forward to applying his “energy, attitude and enthusiasm to the University of Washington.” A triathlete, mountain climber and lifelong wellness advocate, Dr. Jenkins anticipates an excellent fit with the UW community and Pacific Northwest culture.

During the extensive interview process, Dr. Jenkins delivered an insightful seminar entitled “Leading Student Healthcare in a Changing Environment”. He outlined his experience and vision in dealing with the realities and potential issues ranging from the Affordable Care Act to extending public health and wellness outside the exam room. Dr. Jenkins consistently underscored his interest and passion for working with a diverse and changing student population and dedicated health care personnel. His approach to change applies rigorous analysis, ongoing communication, continual process improvement and thoughtful, strategic implementation to achieve successful outcomes and mission alignment.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Search Committee for their sustained, diligent work throughout this search: Ellen Taylor, Tara Cannava, Mary Watts, Lynn Sorensen, Carmen Anderson-Kloth, Peggy Smith, Teresa Strathy, Shannon Baillie, and Kevin Carrabine. I was privileged to serve as Chair for this group of professionals and benefited from their insight, observations, and recommendations throughout the process. In addition, I would like to thank the numerous individuals who invested their time and attention in candidate interviews, seminars, and tours, providing critical feedback that was integral to the final outcome.

Finally, I would like to extend a special note of appreciation for Dr. Bill Neighbor’s interim leadership of Hall Health Center. Working with Tara Cannava and the HHC leadership team, Dr. Neighbor has maintained excellence in operations and achieved objectives that have well-positioned Hall Health for a productive future. I look forward to his continued contributions as Chief of Clinical Services.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Mark Jenkins to the UW and Hall Health Center.
