Assignments
Teaching
Practica
Three times during
this quarter you will have the opportunity to put your ideas on teaching
into practice. Your efforts will be videotaped so that you may evaluate
how well you implemented your own pedagogical goals and how well your students
achieved the musical objectives you set. For each practicum you will be
expected to turn in a rehearsal plan using the
format introduced in MUSED 305. Following your teaching session, you will
be expected to complete a peer and a self-evaluation
report.
Focus
Session
You will be given
the opportunity to follow an elementary instrumental program or a middle/junior
high school choral program through the academic year. Each visit will focus
on one or two particular aspects of the program and will consist of two
parts:
-
observation -- sit in
on at least one class meeting. Along with things relevant to the focus
topic, take note of teaching techniques, class management approaches, material
choices, etc.
-
consultation -- following
or preceding your observation, spend at least 20 minutes with the teacher
gathering thoughts and ideas on the focus topic as well as insights into
what you saw/will see during the class sessions. Use the focus question
outline as a guide, but don't be afraid to pursue other areas that you
think are appropriate to the lessons you observed.
During our in-class
focus session, you will be asked to share thoughts and ideas about what
you have seen and heard. Each student will be expected to hand in (a) a
written report on the observation addressing the questions in the given
outline and (b) a completed observation record.
NOTE: The professionals
who will be working with you are doing so out of their naturally magnanimous
spirit and their sincere desire to support the development of superior
music teachers. Your interactions with them will be expected to keep to
the highest standards of professionalism and the greatest consideration
for their crowded teaching schedules. It will be your responsibility to
contact the instructor, schedule the visits, and plan your transportation.
If more than one student will be visiting the same teacher, your visits
should be conducted as a group. Individual visits would cause an unfair
burden on the instructor's time and attention.
ANOTHER NOTE: The
description above represents your minimum obligation for this assignment.
If a teacher with whom you are working offers any opportunities for further
experiences (lessons, master classes, demonstrations, small-group teaching,
etc.), feel free to accept. Within reason, try not to say no to any opportunity.
Idea
Binder
Over the course
of 304, 305 and 306 you will compile a binder filled with information,
materials and ideas that you and your colleagues create and collect. This
binder will be a resource for you when teaching in your own music classroom,
so it should be neat, complete and clearly organized. You may also include
any other ideas or materials that you feel might be useful in your planning
or implementation of a choral or beginning instrumental program.
Concert
Reports
Over the course of the
academic year you will be expected to attend three school concert performances.
One report will be due each term, though you are welcome to complete the
observations at any point before their due date. These should be school-based
performances, not festival appearances. For each observation complete a
concert
report outline.
