Assignments & Expectations

Readings

Your success in class discussion will be contingent on the attention you have given the reading assignments. It is expected that you will be conversant with the assigned excerpts, chapters or articles before you come to the class meetings.

Response Paragraphs
After six selected readings, you will be asked to write a paragraph responding to an aspect of the reading.  Select a quote, write it at the top of your paper, then “deconstruct” – agree, disagree, relate to your own experiences, etc.  The purpose of this is for you to actively reflect on the text. These are to be short (one paragraph in length) yet compelling and written to potentially share with your colleagues. Submit via the Catalyst dropbox.

Management Model Presentations

Be a teacher! You and a colleague will be responsible for the presentation (12 minutes, max.) of a selected classroom management model. Be prepared to present such items as (but not limited to) background, rationale, implementation procedures, unique characteristics, and specific strengths and weaknesses—both as identified by others and as perceived by you. Remember, your colleagues will have read the chapter already, so be creative. As part of your presentation prepare:
(a)    1 scenario that depicts your management model in action;
(b)    a 1-page handout that outlines the main points of your presentation (this will be a resource for you and your classmates, so be sure it is clear, complete and logical);
(c)    a brief quiz (4 items) designed to assess students’ familiarity with the main ideas of the chapter associated with your model. These will be compiled and administered where noted on the schedule. [Due, along with answers, via email by 9:00 on the morning of class]

How will you be graded? See a copy of the assessment form that will be used here.

Observations

You will be expected to conduct a minimum of three observations over the course of the term.
  • Students who are currently teaching should complete observation assignments 1 or 2, 3 and 5.
  • Students not currently teaching should complete observation assignments 1, 2 and 4.
Your observations will focus on issues of classroom management strategies and student behavior. Instructions and response forms are available below.
Sample Test Questions

Using the Boyle & Radocy reading as a guide, develop 5 questions that test the knowledge gained in this course. Four questions should relate to classroom management; one should relate to assessment. Include an answer guide.

Test and Final Exam

The test on Madsen & Madsen and the final exam will be based on ideas addressed in class discussions, observations, and readings from the course. The final exam will include material from the entire term.
