Teaching Practicum 3 - Teaching through Literature

You will be teaching a portion of one of the selections included in your score packet. Your task will be:

1. To plan a logical and coherent series of lessons with your class colleagues (multiple class members will teach the same piece on the same day);

2. To identify the musical and technical challenges in the section you will teach;

3. To construct a rehearsal plan that includes attention to this new knowledge.

For this lesson you will be expected to turn in a lesson plan. Follow the format that was introduced in MUSED 304 and MUSED 340. Objectives should be specific, student-centered and observable. Lessons will be 7 minutes in length.

Some things to keep in mind:
1. All students should be engaged in musical (or music-related) activity for the majority of the lesson . . . aim for 80%.

2. Make sure the students make music--remember to recontextualize learning.

3. This is both a rehearsal and a lesson--work with the group but be ready to give attention and feedback to individuals.

4. You are helping the students prepare for a performance. Make things correct . . . but also make things better. PRECISION!

5. Avoid the temptation of explanation.

6. Ask for help! Please feel free to visit me for guidance on content and delivery as well as feedback on strategies you have already planned.

Remember, you are an ensemble member for your colleagues. Please prepare your part for both pieces so they can have a positive, productive and happy teaching experience!
