PEDS 642 – Pediatric Clinical Clerkship – Sheridan, WY

Sheridan is a place in old west history, it is a place to see what life was like as a cowboy, rancher, or pioneer along the Westward migration trails. You will discover Native American history and Western art in this charming town that had legendary icons that once roamed the area. There are dramatic vistas of the Bighorn Mountains meeting the serenity of wide-open spaces. Author Ernest Hemingway put the finishing touches on A Farewell to Arms at the Historic Sheridan Inn Hotel.

Outdoor adventurists find a multitude of activities within the surrounding Bighorn National Forest. Epic events, live music, remarkable ranches and hotels, wilderness hikes and more live at the base of the Bighorns in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Credentialing

This site requires current TB testing. Please ensure you are aware of this and comply with site requirements.

Complete the following and send to Britney Varner, as directed.

  • SMH HR and EH Packet
  • Letter of good standing (In your E-Value Portfolio)
  • Immunization records, along with current flu immunization. Student immunization records can be requested through UW Hall Health.
  • If you have been fit tested: send a copy with the size and manufacture (if it is what the hospital carries, you will not be required to be fit tested on your orientation day)
  • Professional photo (for ID badge)

One week prior to your start date, you will need to complete and send:

  • Sublease agreement for housing (signature required)
  • Student log in information to complete training modules

Experience

Your first day of orientation will consist of a tour of the hospital, meeting with employee health to review your documents/immunization and fit testing, fitness room orientation (open 24 hours for use), go across the street to the pediatric clinic to meet staff and get a tour.

You will be assigned to a pediatric preceptor each day, Monday through Friday. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00AM – 5:30PM. There will be one weekday overnight call per week.

The workday generally begins at between 7:30AM-8:00AM with rounds at the hospital. After rounds you will see patients in clinic for the day, followed by evening rounds.

You will be assigned to individual preceptors for each day at the time of your arrival. Additionally, you will have one weekend of at-home call, during which time you will round in the hospital with a preceptor and come to the hospital for any emergency room consults, deliveries, or other urgent events.

Clinic Dress Code

The local dress code is business/casual (jeans are acceptable as long as no holes, rips, stains).

Housing

There is a 2-bedroom furnished house with a shared bathroom. You may be paired in the house with another medical student of the same gender. Approximately 1-week prior to your start date, you will be contacted by Britney Varner with your housing information. No pets allowed.

Transportation

Housing is walking distance from the hospital and clinic, and while a car is not required it is recommended, as you may want to explore the area, or run errands. There is no local transportation available.

Community Activities

There are many different activities, including hiking trails, outdoor adventuring in the mountains, museums, areas of historical interest.
