PEDS 660 – Pediatric Clinical Clerkship – Cheyenne, WY

Cheyenne is located near the geographical and time center of North America. Strategically situated at a major transportation hub (the intersection of Interstates 25 and 80 and two major railroads), it is a developing center of commerce. Only 90 minutes north of Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne sits as the northern anchor city of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. It covers a land area of 21.1 square miles and at an elevation of 6000 feet.

The City of Cheyenne is the capital of the state of Wyoming. Cheyenne is also the capital of rodeo and railroad, boasting many western attractions and events, with rich railroad, military, and ranching history.

Credentialing

4-weeks prior to the start of your rotation provide the following documentation to Evan Rainey, Medical Staff Coordinator:

  • Letter of good standing from the School of Medicine
  • Immunization records: obtain via UW Hall Health and include COVID + Influenza, if in season.
  • Professional photo

Experience

As the only pediatric clinic in the area, more in-depth exposure to pediatric issues is available. Each physician has their own style and special interest including care of the newborn, adolescent medicine, child behavior and development, school problems, care of the hospitalized patient, and handicapping and chronic conditions in childhood. Pediatric Cardiac and Rehabilitation specialists conduct clinics at Cheyenne Children’s Clinic four times a year each.

Schedule Information

  • One student per rotation
  • 6-weeks inpatient and outpatient in a single practice
  • Instructors are general pediatricians and pediatric hospitalists.
  • Inpatient Rotations: each weekday morning will be spent at the hospital.
  • Outpatient Rotations: each weekday afternoon will be spent in the clinic, apart from Friday PM which is unassigned time for personal use.
  • Call Schedule: 6 calls are required in this rotation including one weekend call.

Dress Code

Professional attire accompanied with hospital provided ID must be worn. A white coat is functional and provides identity. We suggest regular wear, but it is not mandatory.

Helpful Hints

  • Pre-round on patients early.
  • Have progress notes in chart before doctor arrives.
  • Be prepared to write orders/progress notes at any time.
  • Meet with attendings at beginning of hospital week to understand expectations. Understanding their respective styles will ensure your experience to be a smooth one.

Housing

A one bedroom/one bath apartment with coin laundry facilities is available on-site across the street from the hospital, located in the same house as the OB/GYN student. Housing is provided free of charge for the student only, and is gender assigned. No overnight guests are allowed, and housing is not provided for pets, family, friends, significant other, etc. If you are traveling with pets, family, friends or significant other, you will need to make separate arrangements. Please let the site coordinators know should you need affordable recommendations.

Food, Activities, Shopping + Fun

A meal ticket for $250 at the hospital cafeteria, Greenhouse Grill, will be provided for first time WWAMI students at Cheyenne Regional. Many of the usual fast-food and chain restaurants are available as well as a few local restaurants. A variety of shopping stores available, from clothing, outfitters, office supply, to coffee and various special interest.

Indoor activities available include exercise facilities nearby (Gold’s Gym – partners with CRMC), and the municipal pool. The Greenway is 14-miles long, travels through Cheyenne and is excellent for walking, running, biking, or skating. Other popular activities include skiing, snowboarding, hunting, hiking, camping, fishing, tennis, golf, horseback riding and theatre.

Transportation

A personal automobile is required, and is needed for transport to exercise facilities, shopping, and other personal activities.
