Orientation

On the first day of the rotation students report to the hospital at a time and location with Amanda Meekins (arranged in advance of your arrival) for your orientation. After orientation, students will be directed to Jackson Pediatrics to complete the orientation with the Clerkship Site Director.

Clinical Responsibilities

You will be assigned to a pediatric preceptor each day, Monday through Friday. There is no overnight call. The workday generally begins at 8:00-9:00 AM with rounds at the hospital. After rounds you will see patients in clinic for the day, followed by evening rounds. You will be assigned to individual preceptors for each day at the time of your arrival. Additionally, you will have one weekend of at-home call, during which time you will round in the hospital with a preceptor and come to the hospital for any emergency room consults, deliveries, or other urgent events.

Special Opportunities

It may be possible to arrange clinical experiences with local specialists who care for children and/or visiting pediatric specialists. If you are interested, please discuss these opportunities with the site director.

Dress Code

White coats and ties are unnecessary. Please dress in business-casual attire (i.e. slacks, khakis, or skirts and button downs or blouses). You will be provided with an I.D. badge for the hospital.

Housing

A fully furnished condominium is provided within easy walking distance of the hospital and the Jackson Pediatrics clinic. Amanda Meekins will contact you to arrange key pickup. Phone, cable and internet service are provided.

Food

Food is available at the hospital cafeteria as well as at many local stores and restaurants.

Local Transportation

Your housing is very close to the hospital and the Jackson Pediatrics clinic, and is within easy walking distance of Town Square. For transportation to grocery stores or other clinics, public transportation is available but a bike (weather permitting) or car may be helpful.

Travel

Travel to and from Jackson should be arranged through the UW SOM. Although a car is not necessary while in Jackson, you may find one helpful for shopping and recreational purposes, especially during snow season (October-May).
