PEDS 601-K – WRITE Inpatient Clerkship – Kalispell, MT

Kalispell is a Salish word meaning “flat land above the lake”. The center of the Flathead Valley is Kalispell, a relaxing Western getaway tucked between the splendorous mountains of Glacier National Park and the crystal-clear waters of Flathead Lake. Kalispell’s charming downtown shopping district, craft breweries and distilleries, dozens of restaurants with a dash of Montana flavor, and outdoor recreation activities for families of all ages make it the perfect base camp for anyone traveling to take in a day, a week or even more in the wilds of Northwest Montana.

Housing

Once the above paperwork is received, we will provide you with housing information.

Transportation

A car is recommended for travel in Kalispell. Public transportation is limited. Uber does have a few drivers in the valley, but they are not particularly abundant. In the winter, snow tires are helpful, especially when traveling between sites.

Experience

Logan Health Student Affiliations Team will meet you on your first day with your badge. One of them will help you set up computer access and do a brief training your first day. Following orientation there will be a tour of the hospital, introductions, and a discussion of expectations for your rotation.

During this rotation, each student is required to take call one weekend. Weekend call is from 8:00 a.m. Saturday to 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

Inpatient Care: all students spend three weeks with the pediatric hospitalists. During our days we pre-round on patients, attend multidisciplinary rounds at 9am every day, round on all children on the pediatric floor and PICU. We ask that you formally present your patients on rounds every day and provide input on their care. Daily progress notes are in SOAP format and are problem-based plans. Admission H&Ps must be complete within 12 hours. We want you to truly follow your patients from the time of admission until discharge. Therefore, we encourage you to follow them through surgery, endoscopy, interventional radiology, etc.

Other opportunities may include working with pediatric sub-specialists (surgery, hematology/oncology, neonatology, cardiology, neurology, endocrine, neurosurgery, GI, psychiatry (including the inpatient pediatric psychiatry unit), and anesthesia). Logan Health holds weekly pediatric radiology rounds, monthly Pediatric Grand Rounds, and the hospital also hosts a weekly Grand Rounds that includes all providers.
