PEDS 653 – Pediatric Clinical Clerkship – Helena, MT
Cradled in the foothills of the Montana Rockies, surrounded by pristine forests, alive with history and culture, lies “the heartbeat of Montana”, Helena. The Helena area has provided the setting for thousands of years of Native American use, the Lewis & Clark Expedition, the wanderings of fur trappers & gold prospectors, homestead farmers, key transcontinental railroad lines, and the state capital. Helena is a community with a colorful history. A unique blend of the past and the present, whether it’s business suits or blue jeans…people from all walks of life can find an environment to suit their lifestyle. The city itself is alive with the community spirit, street festivals, theater, museums, symphonies, fairs and rodeos. It is the hub of education and health care, a city of timeless treasures and sophisticated services.
Situated half-way between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, Helena is nestled in the midst of the Big Belt, Garnet and Elkhorn mountain ranges. Mt. Helena, a city park, enables visitors to look down on the city from the 5,460 foot peak. Helena has a semi-arid climate, with long, cold, and moderately snowy winters, hot and dry summers, and short springs and autumns in between. Snowfall has been observed in every month of the year, but is usually absent from May to September, and normally accumulates in only light amounts.
