The world is finished and the gate
is closed!
I am tired of the light, eye and ear are tired of the light. |
Wie lärmt dies Licht! wie's
aufprallt und zerschellt,
Zu Scherben selbst, am Scherbenberg der Welt. |
How noisy this light! How it
collides with the shard mountain of the world
And is broken into shards itself. |
Nun schließt sich Dunkel um den
Raum daher,
Schlingt ein, verschlingt ihn--und rist nicht mehr. |
The darkness closes in upon the
universe,
Winding in, devouring it, and it is no more. |
Komm, Finsternis -- du, deren
Schooß zerriß
Einstmals das Licht, was säumst du, Finsternis? |
Come, Darkness -- you whose womb
Once ruptured the light, why do you hesitate, Darkness? |

Ohr und Auge bricht
Sein Lärm nicht mehr: und doch nicht schweigt das Licht! |
The light does not remain silent --
through ear and eye
Its noise no longer breaks: and yet the light does not remain silent. |

Und wallt und hallt:o Grauen, welches Grau'n! |
Not to see and to see nothing in
it, --
Seething and reverberating; O horror, what horror! |
Und Schlummer überschleicht die
Seele sacht,
Ein Schweigen tief, wie tiefe Meeresnacht. |
And slumber gently steals over the
soul,
A deep silence, as deep as the nocturnal sea. |

And he who sits in the mind and
thinks and drones,
And he who hammers in the heart is silent. |

Sound against sound,
Woe, woe, shrilly -- piercingly through! Universe against universe! -- |
O Herrscher Geist, -- hast du dich
offenbart?
Warst du's, der Freide! rief, -- und Friede ward? |
O lordly spirit, -- have you
revealed yourself?
Was it you who cried "Peace!" -- and became peace? |
Eins, innig Eins, -- gleichwei in
Liebeswahl

One, inwardly one -- just as in
love's choice
It embraces itself, marries ray to ray -- |

Rays of earthly suns do not fuse in this way! |

And what sorrow brought it down!-- |

And what a storm blasts through
this airy game--!
Lost erring -- with neither path nor goal! |
Nun alle Kraft gerafft in Kampf und

All strength now gathered in
struggle and rage,
The light flares up and ignites into flame! -- |

Then it gnashes, it rumbles -- it restrains itself no more. |
