ACCL 2003 Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS


The 2003 ACCL Conference will be held in London from 6-8 August 2003. The conference will be hosted by the Centre of Chinese Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

The theme of the conference is:

Chinese Literature and Tolerance

The organisers welcome individual paper proposals or panel proposals relating to one or more of the following topics:

  • tolerance as a theme in Chinese writing and/or criticism
  • tolerance and intolerance in traditional Chinese views of literature
  • the tolerance of the western critical and theoretical apparatus towards Chinese texts and/or views of literature
  • theories of tolerance and their usefulness in studying Chinese literature and culture
  • the tolerance of the Chinese literary elite towards representatives of popular literature or culture
  • censorship and the tolerance or intolerance of Chinese governments towards literary expression
  • the treatment of ethnic and religious minorities in Chinese literature and criticism
Proposals should be no longer than 300 words. Panel proposals should include abstracts for all papers.

The conference fee (early registration) will be GBP 30.00 (USD 50.00) for academic staff and GBP 20.00 (USD 35.00) for students. The fee will be due before 1 April 2003. Information about methods of payment will be distributed to participants in early March, together with detailed information about accommodation options.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

  • 15 FEBRUARY 2003: Deadline for submitting paper or panel abstracts
  • 1 MARCH 2003: Participants will be informed if their paper/panel has been accepted; registration forms and detailed programme information will be sent out
  • 1 APRIL 2003: Early registration deadline
