Teaching Assistant Job Description
This is a part-time, non-exempt position and reports to the Program Manager. The hourly pay is $14/hour.
Job Summary: Provide essential support to Seattle ReCreative’s arts education programs by delivering direct instruction to students of all ages and abilities under the direction and guidance of the Program Manager or lead teacher.
Essential Functions:
- Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of the Program Manager or lead teacher, using lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
- Supervise students in Seattle ReCreative’s classes and workshops, both at Seattle ReCreative and in the community during outreach activities.
- Prepare lesson materials, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations under the direction and guidance of the Program Coordinator or lead teacher.
- Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and materials, in order to prevent injuries and damage.
- Observe students’ performance, and record relevant data to assess progress.
- Organize and supervise games and other recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.
- Provide extra assistance to students with special needs, such as non-English-speaking students or those with physical and developmental disabilities.
- Maintain Seattle ReCreative’s equipment and supplies, and assist students with hardware and software use.
- Use computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
- Clean and organize teaching materials and supplies.
- Maintain attendance records.
- Attend staff meetings as required.
- Enforce organizational policies and rules governing participants’ behavior.

Must have weekday daytime availability, as well as occasional weekends. Must have a car and WA state driver’s license.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum of two years teaching experience with in-school and out-of-school classrooms
- Experience or strong interest in nonprofit organizations.
- Interest in environmental issues and/or alternative art and arts education (ideally both).
- Experience working in diverse, community-based settings.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills (written, oral and visual)
- Regular weekly availability for planning and teaching beginning immediately
Essential Duties:
- Lifting and carrying 30 pounds; Developed fine motor control, grasp, handle, manipulate objects with fingers;
- Standing for long periods of time; frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, stooping, and squatting.
- Able to travel across a variety of surfaces (stairs, ramps, uneven terrain).
Working Conditions:
- Many classes take place within a retail store environment: temperature varies, loud noises, occasional crowds.
- Other programs and events may occur in the space during store hours.
- Outreach events make take place outdoors, in schools, and at large public events.
